Scoring a card game round by round

Most family card games are scored hand by hand. At the end of each round, every player counts the points left in their hand or the points they won, and the sheet keeps a running total for each column.

Some games are won by the lowest total. In Five Crowns the game lasts 11 rounds and the lowest score wins; in Skyjo the game ends when someone reaches 100 and the lowest score wins. Others are won by reaching a target first: in Uno the first player to 500 points wins.

Phase 10 adds one more thing to track: which phase each player has completed. Its sheet has a box to tick in every round when the phase is made, alongside the points.

Trick-taking games such as Spades, Oh Hell and Wizard are scored on bids. Each round has a box for the bid and a box for the tricks won, and the online sheet works out the points: in Spades it also counts the bags, and in Oh Hell and Wizard it checks that the tricks add up to the cards dealt.

Paper or phone

Each card game has a standard, a large print and a 2-per-page PDF in US Letter and A4. You can also add your players’ names before you print.

At the table, the online sheet adds every round for you and circles whoever is in the lead, which settles most arguments about the maths before they start.
